As a graphic designer who works with both letters and Chinese characters, I’ve become keenly interested in finding a way to bridge these two major writing systems. With this project, I am interested in tracing back to the origins of language and inventing a new system of images to represent letters. I drew inspiration from old Chinese scripts (Oracle bones script and Small seal characters), and ancient alphabetic letterforms to create a new visual formulation of personal language for typographic experimentation with strong historical links.
My intention is to offer a concept of typographic practice within history, language, and culture. In addition, I want to challenge the legibility of signs in order to subvert the symbolic order of language through an attack on its basic code and challenge viewers to find connections and interpret stories between pictures or typographic elements. I would like to create a mythic visual impression and give viewers the chance to imagine more than mere information.Graphic Design, Typography2014 -
M.Y. Chinese character inspired Latin alphabet. I drew inspiration from old Chinese scripts-Small seal characters and created 26 letters.
Background textures were from scans of handmade marbled paper by me. They were created by floating ink on the surface of water and then laying paper across the image so that the ink image is captured on the paper. This process is originated in China over 2,000 years ago and practiced by the Japanese in the 12th century.Graphic Design2014 -
